Abstract (Document Summary)

Tom Murtaugh, president of the Tippecanoe County Board of Commissioners, was thinking of the county's safety when he signed an emergency declaration about 1:40 p.m. Thursday, banning the use of consumer fireworks, regardless of what state law allows. Over the past week, Lafayette, West Lafayette and Purdue fire chiefs have banned fireworks in their jurisdictions, but without the emergency declaration, state law would have trumped their bans at 5 p.m. today.
